A .STRM file typically acts as a plain text stream location file used by media players like Kodi and Plex. Instead of storing large video or audio payloads, it simply contains a text URL pointing to an active internet stream. Alternatively, the .STRM extension is used for proprietary multi-channel audio files extracted from Nintendo DS (.SDAT) game archives.
Because standard .STRM files are just text shortcuts, they suffer from significant real-world limitations. They require a continuous internet connection to buffer the media, and if the remote server takes the video offline, your file instantly becomes a dead link. Furthermore, standard file converters completely fail when trying to process them. You cannot directly convert a text-based .STRM to an MP4 or MKV because there are no actual media frames inside the file. In the case of the Nintendo DS variant, it is a closed, proprietary format utilizing ADPCM compression that web browsers and standard media players cannot natively read.
To realistically circumvent these limitations, you must extract the URL and download the raw stream directly as an MP4. For Nintendo game files, the best conversion targets are WAV or MP3 to restore compatibility across modern devices.
