An .SS2 file primarily functions as a Sound Stream 2 audio file for Sony PlayStation 2 games, created using CRI Middleware. It is also widely used as a protein secondary structure prediction file by the PSIPRED bioinformatics tool, a spreadsheet data file for FarPoint Spread, or a disguised JPEG image served by the Taobao platform. The .SS2 format is highly ambiguous and heavily proprietary. The audio variant uses closed ADPCM compression that fails to open in standard media players and requires specialized game extraction tools. FarPoint spreadsheet files require an expensive Windows software license to read and are entirely unsupported by web browsers.
