About SPIFF files
A .spiff file contains raster image data saved in the Still Picture Interchange File Format. Developed in 1995 by the Joint Photographic Experts Group, it was intended to be the official container for JPEG compression.
This format has severe practical disadvantages. The software industry largely ignored .spiff in favor of the unofficial JFIF format. As a result, .spiff is entirely obsolete today. Modern web browsers, mobile phones, and default image viewers will not open these files. The format causes endless compatibility issues for users who discover legacy archives.
To use these images today, you must convert them. The best target formats are standard jpg, png, or webp. Because the underlying data is standard JPEG compression, converting to jpg is usually a direct extraction with no loss of image quality.
This file format is difficult to open because most modern decoders dropped support for its headers decades ago. Standard online converters often fail to process it. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SPIFF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert SPIFF file to JPG, PDF, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, TIF, WEBP, ICO, CUR, PSD or PSB, you can use ImageMagick or similar software from the "Legacy Image Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert RAW, PNG, AI, NEF, PSB, DNG, SVG, GIF, EPS, JPG, ARW or PDF files to SPIFF, try ImageMagick or another comparable tool in the "Legacy Image Storage" category.
The SPIFF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SPIFF converter.
