To convert other file formats to the "Sheet Model File" file type, you need software like Bentley MicroStation or a similar tool.
The .SHT file extension is most commonly a MicroStation Sheet Model file utilized by Bentley MicroStation. It contains 2D layouts and 3D views formatted specifically for printing engineering and architectural drawings. Alternatively, the format is used as an HTML File with Server Side Includes (SSI), a sheet metal punch job for TopPunch, a JetDB steel fabrication schedule database, or even a game shader template for Star Wars Galaxies. You can typically open CAD-based .SHT files with Bentley View or MicroStation, while web-based .SHT files can be edited in any code editor like Notepad++.
The primary disadvantage of the CAD-based .SHT format is its highly proprietary nature. Based on the Microsoft Compound file structure, it is incredibly difficult to share with clients or contractors who do not possess a costly CAD software license. Furthermore, .SHT files are entirely unsupported by standard web browsers, document viewers, and operating systems out of the box. Standard online converters almost always fail to process them because translating the complex, proprietary vector geometries requires Bentley's original rendering engine.
When you need to share these files, the best conversion targets are PDF for universal viewing and printing, or DXF and DWG for editing in AutoCAD. Note that exporting to PDF may flatten interactive 3D elements into static 2D lines. If your .SHT is an SSI web file, converting to standard HTML or PHP is recommended for server compatibility.
