About SHIM files

A .SHIM file is a plain text configuration file used by the Scoop command-line installer for Windows. It acts as a lightweight pointer that stores the exact directory path and execution arguments needed to launch a specific program, keeping the system PATH variable clean. These files are generated and managed automatically by the Scoop package manager alongside a proxy .exe file.

The major disadvantage of the .SHIM format is its rigid dependency on the local machine's environment. It only works on the exact PC where it was created. If you move a .SHIM file to another computer or outside the ~\scoop\shims directory, it becomes useless. Furthermore, regular users often mistake it for the actual software executable.

If you need to extract the execution paths, you can convert or rename .SHIM files to TXT, INI, or CONF. Note that editing these paths manually might break your local package installation.

This file format is difficult to open or convert using traditional tools because most standard online converters mistake it for an unrecognized binary executable and fail to process it.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SHIM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
