About SGI files

The .SGI file is a legacy raster image format created by Silicon Graphics, Inc. for their IRIX operating system workstations. Historically used in high-end 3D animation and film production, the format supports 8 to 32-bit color depth and run-length encoding (RLE). Secondary uses include cache files for the Opera browser and data files for the Microsoft Solitaire Collection. You can open .SGI images using heavy, expensive software like Adobe Photoshop or versatile viewers like XnView. However, the format is obsolete. The main disadvantage is a complete lack of native support in modern web browsers, mobile devices, and standard operating system image viewers. It is not suitable for sharing or web publishing. To make these images usable today, you must convert them. For web use, convert to WEBP for the smallest file size. For lossless archiving or if the file contains an alpha channel (transparency), convert to PNG. If you just need a quick preview, JPG is best. Drag and drop your file to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.
