About SGI files
The .SGI file extension primarily represents the Silicon Graphics Image format (also known as RGB, BW, or RGBA), a legacy raster graphic standard native to Silicon Graphics (SGI) IRIX workstations. While historically significant for 3D texture mapping and scientific visualization, this format poses significant challenges today. It is essentially an orphan format in modern computing environments; standard operating system viewers like Windows Photos or macOS Preview often cannot open these files, and web browsers completely lack support for rendering them. Additionally, uncompressed .SGI files can be excessively large compared to modern counterparts.
To make these files usable, conversion is almost always necessary. For general viewing, sharing, or web use, converting to PNG is recommended as it preserves the Alpha channel (transparency) often found in 32-bit SGI files. For photographic content where file size is a priority, convert to JPG. For archival purposes that retain the high color depth used in scientific imaging, TIFF is the ideal target. Occasionally, a .SGI file may be an Opera browser cache file or a Microsoft Solitaire data file; if your file fails to open in an image editor, use convert.guru to inspect and determine the correct format.

The SGI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SGI converter.
