About SFK files
The .SFK file is a proprietary audio waveform peak file primarily generated by MAGIX Sound Forge Pro (and legacy Sony Creative Software like Vegas Pro). It is an auxiliary cache file that sits alongside your actual audio files (such as WAV or MP3). When an audio editor opens a large file, scanning it to draw the visual sound wave on the timeline requires significant processing power. To save time during future sessions, the software renders the visual peak data once and saves it as an .SFK file.
Users frequently try to convert .SFK files because they share the same base filename as their music (e.g., track.wav.sfk), leading to the misconception that it is a playable audio format. The primary disadvantage of this format is that it clutters directories and causes severe confusion when users attempt to share music files via email or cloud storage, only to send a useless visual cache file instead of the actual song.
Because an .SFK file contains absolute zero audio data, converting it to MP3, WAV, or FLAC is physically impossible. You cannot extract music from a file that only contains drawing instructions for a software interface. This file format is highly proprietary and difficult to open or convert outside its native ecosystem. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded text format, viewing or extracting metadata may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SFK file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert SFK file to MP4, MP3, WAV, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WMA, M4A, AIFF, OPUS, ALAC or APE, you can use Sound Forge Pro or similar software from the "Audio Waveform Visual Cache" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MIDI, AAC, TTA, AU, WV, DTS, MID, FLAC, RA, MP3, PCM or WAV files to SFK, try Sound Forge Pro or another comparable tool in the "Audio Waveform Visual Cache" category.
The SFK Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SFK converter.
