About SDM files

The .SDM extension is a prime example of file format ambiguity, serving two distinct and incompatible purposes. Most frequently (approx. 27%), it functions as a Samsung System Dump file (Silent Log), generated by Samsung mobile devices to record kernel activity, modem logs, and system errors for debugging. These files are often binary-encoded or raw text, making them unreadable to standard text editors like Notepad++ without cleanup. Users typically encounter friction here when trying to diagnose device crashes, as the proprietary encoding requires specific viewers or conversion to TXT to parse readable strings.

Alternatively, .SDM files are legacy Mail Merge documents created by StarOffice (the predecessor to Apache OpenOffice). These files, common in versions 3.0 through 5.x, contain database links and formatted text for mailing lists. The primary challenge is obsolescence: modern suites like Microsoft Word do not natively support this deprecated format, effectively locking away your data. For archiving or editing, the best workflow is converting these legacy documents to PDF for preservation or DOCX/ODT for continued editing. Less common variations include SDS/2 steel detailing models, which require specialized CAD conversion.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SDM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted JSON, PDF, STW, STQ and DXP files.

The SDM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SDM converter.
