About SAFETEXT files

The .safetext file format is a password-protected text document created by the obsolete SafeText application. Originally developed by DeLorme, this utility was frequently bundled with software like Street Atlas USA in the 1990s and early 2000s. Users relied on these files to safely store confidential notes, passwords, and private travel details.

The massive disadvantage of the .safetext format today is its proprietary encryption and complete lack of modern support. It is entirely obsolete. The files cannot be opened by modern text editors, and they require a legacy Windows environment to run the original software. Furthermore, without the exact user-generated password, the data is permanently locked away in an unreadable state.

If you manage to decrypt the contents on a legacy machine, it is highly recommended to convert the text to standard TXT, DOCX, or PDF formats for long-term preservation. Standard online converters fail to process .safetext files because they cannot bypass the proprietary security layer. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SAFETEXT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The SAFETEXT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SAFETEXT converter.
