About S2R files

The .S2R file extension primarily represents two distinct proprietary formats: a Spike2 Resource File or a Surface roughness measurement data file. In neuroscience and physiology, Cambridge Electronic Design uses the .S2R format to store resource and configuration data for its Spike2 data acquisition software. In industrial metrology, Mahr uses .S2R files to save high-precision surface roughness measurements captured by their MarSurf testing devices. Both versions of the .S2R file share a major disadvantage: they are heavily locked into their respective proprietary ecosystems. You cannot open a Spike2 resource or a MarSurf measurement without purchasing and installing their expensive, specialized software. This makes sharing data with external researchers, engineers, or clients highly frustrating, as the files are completely unsupported by standard operating systems or web browsers. To make this data usable, users typically need to convert .S2R files to standard formats like CSV, TXT, or PDF.
