About RTI files
A .RTI file is an audio instrument data file used primarily by legacy music sequencer software, specifically Real Tracker and Raster Music Tracker. These files store waveform data, envelope configurations, and synthesis parameters that instruct the tracker's audio engine on how to generate a specific sound - such as a bassline or a synthesizer lead. In the case of Raster Music Tracker, the instrument data is explicitly formatted to emulate the POKEY sound chip found in classic Atari 8-bit computers.
The major disadvantage of the .RTI format is its extreme obsolescence and lack of compatibility. Because these files rely on proprietary, tracker-specific audio engines (often built for MS-DOS or early Windows), they cannot be opened by modern digital audio workstations (DAWs) like Ableton Live or standard media players. Opening them requires installing outdated software, and running them often necessitates emulators like DOSBox.
To use these vintage instruments in modern production workflows, you need to convert them into standard sample formats such as WAV, FLAC, or SF2 (SoundFont). However, this conversion often flattens dynamic synthesis parameters into static audio, losing the real-time modulation capabilities native to the tracker environment.
Because .RTI is a closed, proprietary configuration format rather than a standard audio stream, typical online audio converters will fail to process it. They lack the specialized libraries or emulation layers required to decode POKEY chip instructions or Real Tracker envelopes. Just drag and drop your file into convert.guru to identify the exact format, view its internal structure, and convert it when possible. If our analysis detects uncompressed PCM audio data embedded within the instrument, viewing or extracting the raw sample may still be possible.

The RTI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RTI converter.
