About RSX files
An .RSX file is an XML-based sidecar file generated by RED Digital Cinema cameras. It stores non-destructive color grading metadata, such as ISO, white balance, and contrast settings, linked to a specific R3D raw video file. These files are primarily applied automatically when importing footage into REDCINE-X PRO or professional video editors like Adobe Premiere Pro.
The main disadvantage of the .RSX format is that it is completely useless for playback on its own. Because it is strictly a text-based settings file, it contains no actual video data and cannot be played in standard media players. Users often mistakenly try to view it as a video or lose the file during media transfers, which strips the custom in-camera look from their raw footage. Furthermore, reading the raw XML code directly is difficult for non-technical users without dedicated cinema software.
To easily read or extract the metadata outside of the RED ecosystem, convert the file to TXT, JSON, or standard XML. If your goal is to share the actual video, you cannot convert the .RSX alone; you must render the paired R3D file into web-friendly formats like MP4 or MOV. Just drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert its text data securely right in your browser.

The RSX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RSX converter.
