The .RPJ extension is a multi-format identifier used by several disparate software ecosystems, creating significant confusion for users. The most common use case (approx. 25%) is a Microscope Image Analysis Project created by Future WinJoe or SpaceWinJoe software, often bundled with USB digital microscopes. These files do not always contain the full image data but rather act as a container for measurements, annotations, and references to external raw image files. Opening them without the original proprietary hardware drivers and software is nearly impossible.
A nearly equal share of users (23%) will encounter .RPJ files generated by Rillsoft Project, a comprehensive project management suite. In this context, the file is a UTF-16 (LE) encoded database storing Gantt charts, resource schedules, and capacity planning data. The friction here is high: sharing a native .RPJ schedule with stakeholders who do not possess a paid Rillsoft license is impractical. For Archiving or Distribution, the best practice is converting these schedules to PDF (for static viewing) or XLSX (for data manipulation in Excel). For Interoperability with other project management tools (like Microsoft Project), converting to MPP or XML is preferred.
A third notable category (15%) involves educational robotics. Here, the .RPJ file contains logic and control flow data for Rogic, the programming environment for RoboRobo kits. These are text-based or binary instruction sets useless outside the Rogic compiler.
