Extract text from Rockchip firmware files (RFW)
To convert RFW firmware files to another format, you need RKDevTool or other System software.
To convert other file formats to the "Device Firmware Container" file type, you need software like RKDevTool or a similar tool.
The .rfw file is a proprietary firmware package created by Fuzhou Rockchip Electronics. It is used to distribute and install full operating system images (ROMs) onto devices powered by Rockchip System-on-Chips (SoCs), such as Android TV boxes, custom tablets, and single-board computers.
To open or flash an .rfw file, users typically rely on specialized Windows utilities like RKDevTool or the Rockchip Factory Tool.
Users often want to convert or unpack .rfw files to access the internal file system, modify the Android OS, or extract specific apps. The main disadvantage of this format is its closed, monolithic nature. It bundles multiple partition images (like boot.img, system.img, and recovery.img) into a single unreadable block. You cannot natively browse an .rfw file in Windows Explorer, macOS Finder, or standard web browsers. It also requires specific hardware states (Maskrom or Loader mode) just to interact with it natively.
The best "conversion" approach is extraction. Recommended target formats include IMG (for isolating individual system partitions) or standard ZIP archives for browsing the extracted files. Be aware that while extracting is possible, repacking these files back into a functional, bootable .rfw requires exact partition mapping and signed headers.
This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because standard archive tools like 7-Zip do not recognize the proprietary Rockchip header structure. Often, only the original Rockchip manufacturing software or open-source reverse-engineered terminal tools can properly read or export the data.
