Convert REA to another file type
To convert REA Data files to another format, you need HSC Chemistry or other Data software.
Convert a file to REA
To convert other file formats to the "Thermodynamic Calculation File" file type, you need software like HSC Chemistry or a similar tool.
About REA files
The .REA file extension is primarily associated with HSC Chemistry, a specialized software suite used by chemical engineers and metallurgists for thermodynamic calculations. These files store Reaction Equation data, including enthalpy, entropy, and heat capacity values required for process simulation. The catch for users is the proprietary nature of the format; opening a .REA file typically requires a paid license for HSC Chemistry (developed by Metso), which can be prohibitively expensive for casual viewing. Engineers often need to convert these files to XLSX (Microsoft Excel) or CSV to analyze the data in standard spreadsheet tools or include it in technical reports.
A secondary, legacy use case for this extension is as a Readme file - essentially a plain text document renamed from TXT to .REA. These are harmless but annoying because modern operating systems do not associate them with a default text editor, causing "Unknown File Type" errors. Users with this variant simply need to view the text or convert it to PDF for archiving.
Critical Warning: If your personal files (photos, documents) have suddenly been renamed with a .REA extension and you cannot open them, your system may be infected with the Dharma or Crysis ransomware. In this scenario, the file is not "convertible" in the traditional sense and requires specialized decryption tools.
Convert.Guru analyzes your REA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert REA file to , you can use HSC Chemistry or similar software from the "Chemical Reaction Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert files to REA, try HSC Chemistry or another comparable tool in the "Chemical Reaction Data" category.
The REA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our REA converter.
