The .R2D file extension represents two distinct formats: a legacy Borland Reflex 2 Database and a modern RISA-2D Structural Model. Borland Reflex was a popular DOS-based flat-file database system from the 1980s. Conversely, RISA-2D is current structural engineering software used to design and analyze two-dimensional frames, trusses, and continuous beams.
Users face different challenges depending on their .R2D file. The Borland Reflex format is completely obsolete. Modern operating systems cannot open it natively, and it requires a DOS emulator to run the original software. This creates a high risk of data lock-in. Meanwhile, RISA-2D models are highly proprietary, requiring a paid license to open, view, or print. Sharing these engineering files with clients or contractors who do not own the software is extremely frustrating.
For legacy databases, the goal is migrating data to modern formats like CSV or TXT. For structural models, users typically need DXF or PDF exports to view the structural geometry. However, because both formats are heavily proprietary or undocumented, standard online converters fail to process them. They lack the specific binary parsing engines required to extract the data.
