About R2D files

The .R2D extension represents a fork in the road between legacy data archiving and modern structural engineering.

Most commonly, .R2D files are databases created by Borland Reflex 2, a flat-file database management system popular in the DOS era. These files are structurally archaic; they contain valuable historical records but are locked behind a proprietary format that modern operating systems (like Windows 11 or macOS) simply cannot execute. Attempting to open these in standard text editors often yields gibberish due to binary encoding. To rescue this data, the primary goal is converting the .R2D tables into open, structured formats like CSV or XLS for import into Microsoft Excel.

Alternatively, an .R2D file may be an input file for RISA-2D, a structural analysis application by RISA Tech. These files contain critical engineering data - geometry, boundary conditions, and load specifications - used to model 2D structures. The friction here is licensing and interoperability; sharing a raw .R2D file with an architect or client who doesn't possess a RISA license is futile. For these workflows, users typically need to convert the model geometry to DXF for use in AutoCAD or generate a PDF report for documentation.

Convert.Guru analyzes your R2D file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted RXR, RXH and CHR files.

FAQ

If you want to convert R2D file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use RISA-2D or similar software from the "Legacy Database / Structural Model" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to R2D, try RISA-2D or another comparable tool in the "Legacy Database / Structural Model" category.

The R2D Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our R2D converter.
