The .qtr file extension primarily belongs to two completely different software systems. Most commonly, it acts as a QuickTime for Windows component or QuickTime Extension Resource utilized by Apple QuickTime. Internally, these files are formatted as standard Windows Executables (EXE) or Dynamic Link Libraries (DLL) but are customized to act as plugins that extend QuickTime's media capabilities. Alternatively, .qtr files function as Historical trend data files generated by ICONICS GENESIS32 TrendWorX32, an industrial automation and SCADA suite. These data files are structured using the Microsoft Compound format to store specialized telemetry and HMI (Human-Machine Interface) trend logs.
Users often encounter .qtr files and mistakenly assume they are playable video or audio files due to the Apple QuickTime association. This causes significant frustration because standard media players cannot open or convert them to MP4, MOV, or MP3. They are proprietary system files or industrial databases, not media containers. Furthermore, Apple deprecated QuickTime for Windows in 2016, leaving these component files obsolete and potentially vulnerable to security exploits. The ICONICS data files carry their own disadvantages, requiring an expensive, enterprise-level license to read or export the logged data properly.
