The .QLV file extension is primarily known as a proprietary encrypted video format downloaded via the Tencent Video (QQLive) client. In a secondary context, it also functions as a QGIS layerVersion Save File created by Enrico Ferreguti to store spatial layer states.
The Tencent Video format is deliberately restrictive. It is heavily encrypted with Digital Rights Management (DRM) to prevent piracy and enforce ecosystem lock-in. These files come with major disadvantages: they require the official, often localized desktop app to open, cannot be edited, and are completely unsupported by universal media players like VLC or standard web browsers. The QGIS version is similarly isolated to its specific plugin environment.
Users overwhelmingly need to convert .QLV to MP4, MKV, or AVI for normal playback on mobile devices, smart TVs, or for editing in software like Adobe Premiere Pro. However, because this is a closed, proprietary format actively fortified by Tencent, standard online converters universally fail to process it.
