These plugins allow users to press the spacebar to preview files that the operating system natively ignores. They are primarily used by QL-Win, a popular open-source project that brings macOS-style QuickLook functionality to Windows, as well as native macOS QuickLook. Users often need to convert or extract these files to inspect their contents, check for malicious code, or modify the plugin's configuration. The current format has a major disadvantage: it acts as a black box. A .qlplugin is an application component, not a standard document, which means standard web browsers and text editors cannot open it.
