About Q3D files

The .Q3D file is a proprietary project archive created by Quest3D, a legacy visual programming and real-time 3D engine developed by Act-3D. These files store a complete 3D scene, including meshes, textures, animations, and proprietary node-based logic channels used to build interactive 3D applications.

The primary disadvantage of the .Q3D format is its undocumented, closed binary structure. It is essentially an obsolete format. Because Quest3D was discontinued and relied heavily on legacy DirectX APIs, modern 3D software such as Blender or Autodesk Maya cannot import these files natively. Users are often locked out of their old 3D assets because they no longer possess a working installation of the original engine.

The ideal solution is to open the .Q3D file in the original software and export the static geometry to standard formats like FBX, OBJ, or DAE. Note that any interactive node-based logic cannot be exported and will be permanently lost during the conversion to standard 3D formats.

Standard online converters fail to process .Q3D files because they lack the specific runtime engine required to interpret the logic graph and extract the geometry. This file format is exceptionally difficult to convert because only the original software can properly read or export the visual programming data. If our analysis detects a supported embedded format, viewing or partial asset recovery - such as extracting uncompressed textures or text strings - may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your Q3D file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

FAQ

If you want to convert Q3D file to OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D, STL, PLY or WRL, you can use Quest3D or similar software from the "Real-Time 3D Project" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to Q3D, try Quest3D or another comparable tool in the "Real-Time 3D Project" category.

The Q3D Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our Q3D converter.
