About PYT files

The .PYT file extension stands for a Python Toolbox, primarily used within Esri ArcGIS Pro. It is a plain text file written in Python that defines custom GIS geoprocessing tools, parameters, and execution logic. You can open these files using standard code editors like Visual Studio Code, but running them requires an active ArcGIS license and the proprietary arcpy site package. The main disadvantage of the .PYT format is its strict dependency on the Esri environment. You cannot execute it on a standard Python installation. Furthermore, sharing .PYT files often triggers email security blocks because they are executable scripts. Users often need to convert .PYT files to standard .PY files to edit the code outside of ArcGIS, or to .TXT to safely email the code without triggering antivirus filters. They can also be converted to .PDF for documentation and code review. Because it is a specialized GIS script, standard document converters fail to process it.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PYT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The PYT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PYT converter.
