The .PWZ extension acts as a "Wizard" or configuration script for three distinct, unconnected software ecosystems, making it a frequent source of confusion. The most common origin (approx. 29%) is PADS PowerPCB, where the file functions as a PCB Design Wizard used to automate board setups. These are proprietary engineering files that cannot be opened by standard viewers.

A strong secondary possibility (24%) is a legacy AutoContent Wizard file from Microsoft PowerPoint (versions 97–2003). These files were used to generate presentation templates but are now largely obsolete; modern versions of PowerPoint may refuse to open them due to security blocks on legacy formats. Finally, the file may be a compressed project archive from SPIworksPro, which uses the ZIP standard under the hood.
