About PWR files

The .PWR file is a document format created by PowerWrite, a free, icon-based word processor for Windows originally developed by J&ASoft. It is primarily used to store rich text, supporting custom fonts, text sizes, styling effects, and word wrapping.

Opening .PWR files natively requires the original PowerWrite software. Unfortunately, PowerWrite is now abandonware. The developer, J&ASoft, no longer updates or supports the program. Because .PWR is a non-standard proprietary extension, modern word processors like Microsoft Word or LibreOffice will not recognize it by default. Relying on this format traps your written content in a dead ecosystem, often triggering frustrating system errors when you double-click the file.

To make your text readable and editable on modern devices, you should convert .PWR files to standard formats like DOCX, RTF, or PDF. Converting to TXT is an option if you only need the raw content, but this will permanently erase all text styling and layouts.

Because it is an abandoned format, standard online converters often fail to process .PWR files. Explain why this file format is difficult to open or convert: Emphasize that often only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PWR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
