About PWC files

The .PWC file format primarily serves two completely different purposes: a password recovery cache file created by ElcomSoft Advanced Office Password Recovery, or a compiled software deployment package used by Matrix42 Empirum. In ElcomSoft software, the .PWC file saves the current progress of a brute-force or dictionary password attack. This prevents users from losing days of processing time if the application crashes or the system reboots. For Matrix42 Empirum, a .PWC file acts as an installation wrapper and is essentially a compiled EXE (executable) file.

The main disadvantage of the .PWC format is its heavily proprietary nature. You cannot open a password cache file in standard text editors or browsers, as it contains application-specific binary state data. Similarly, Matrix42 packages are compiled and locked down to execute specific deployment tasks. This makes them practically useless outside their original software ecosystems. Users often struggle to access or extract the underlying contents without an active installation of the original, often expensive, enterprise software.

Converting a .PWC password cache to common formats like TXT or CSV is not possible because the file holds state data, not human-readable text. For the Matrix42 variant, extraction tools designed for Windows installers might unpack the contents, but standard conversion is generally unsupported.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because it is a closed, proprietary format designed specifically for internal software operations. Standard online converters will repeatedly fail to process it. However, you can use convert.guru as a pragmatic workaround. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. Our analysis can inspect the file, detect if it contains an underlying executable structure, and reveal embedded metadata or readable text.

The PWC Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PWC converter.
