The .PR4 extension is highly fragmented and associated with several completely different ecosystems. Historically, its most common use was as a presentation file created by Harvard Graphics, a pioneering but now obsolete presentation graphics program. This legacy format utilizes a Microsoft Compound structure but relies on proprietary encoding from the MS-DOS and early Windows eras. In modern industrial settings, .PR4 is actively used by the KNX Association as an ETS Software project file for building automation. It is also used as an XML-based inverter configuration file by Mitsubishi FR Configurator2, and as a savegame file for the strategy game Port Royale 4.
The main disadvantage of the .PR4 format is its extreme lack of universal compatibility. If it is a Harvard Graphics file, the authoring software has been discontinued for decades, meaning the file cannot be opened in modern web browsers or office suites. Users typically need to salvage the data by converting it to PDF or PPTX, though this usually requires legacy conversion utilities. If the file is a KNX project, the data is locked inside expensive, specialized engineering software.
Because these formats are deeply proprietary or completely obsolete, standard online converters will fail to process .PR4 files.
