The .POT file extension serves two distinct, incompatible purposes. In software development, it is a Portable Object Template file used by the GNU gettext system. It stores the base list of translatable text strings extracted from source code, serving as a blueprint for creating language-specific PO files. Alternatively, it is a legacy PowerPoint Presentation Template created by older versions of Microsoft PowerPoint (versions 97 through 2003).
Both formats present real-world challenges. For localization, a .POT file is useless to an application's translation engine until it is translated into a PO file and compiled into a machine-readable MO file. Manually managing these templates often requires specialized software like Poedit or an active subscription to a translation management platform. For presentation templates, the legacy Microsoft Compound binary format is outdated, heavy, and causes severe compatibility issues on modern mobile devices and web browsers.
