The .POT file extension represents two distinct but widespread file formats, creating frequent confusion for users. The most common iteration is the Portable Object Template, a standard file used in software localization and translation workflows, particularly for WordPress themes and plugins using GNU Gettext. These files serve as the master template containing original text strings ready for translation. While human-readable, working directly with raw .POT files requires specialized tools like Poedit or command-line knowledge. Translators often struggle with these files because they cannot be easily edited in standard office software, making collaboration difficult.
