A .PIECE file serves two entirely different purposes: it is either an XML-based CAD/CAM part definition used by SigmaNEST, or an interleaved document fragment from a Microsoft XPS archive. SigmaNEST uses these files to store geometry, routing, and toolpath data for sheet metal nesting. Alternatively, the Open XML Paper Specification (XPS) uses .PIECE files to break large print jobs into smaller chunks so physical printing can start before the entire document finishes spooling.
The main disadvantage of the .PIECE format is extreme vendor lock-in and file fragmentation. SigmaNEST parts are proprietary and completely unreadable to external machine shops that do not own an expensive SigmaNEST license. Meanwhile, Microsoft XPS is essentially a dead format abandoned in favor of PDF. Worse, an XPS .PIECE file is just a puzzle piece - it contains incomplete data and cannot be opened as a standalone visual document by any standard web browser or image viewer.
To make this data usable, conversion is mandatory. For CNC routing and CAD editing, convert SigmaNEST .PIECE files to universal vector formats like DXF or DWG. For archiving or sharing documents, XPS fragments should be converted to PDF.
