About PG2 files

A .PG2 file is typically a proprietary data container created by PowerGEM software solutions such as TARA (Transmission Adequacy & Reliability Assessment) or PROBE. These files are used by electrical engineers and system planners to store complex parameters for bulk power system reliability studies, generation deliverability, and energy market simulations. In rare legacy cases, the .PG2 extension is also used for Golden Orchard Apple II CD-ROM files or ProGen II frequency generator protocol files.

The main disadvantage of the .PG2 format is that it is entirely closed and proprietary. It contains highly specialized data structures mapping physical power grid topologies and market economics. Because of this, you cannot simply open a .PG2 file using standard office tools. If your team members or clients do not have expensive commercial licenses for PowerGEM software, they are completely locked out of viewing the simulation data.

To make this data accessible, you must convert the .PG2 file into standard, universal formats. Exporting or converting to PDF or DOCX allows non-engineers to read reports, check compliance, and review grid parameters. In some cases, raw node and branch data can be extracted into TXT or CSV, though you will lose the interactive visual diagrams and the complex mathematical relational logic inherent to the original simulation model.

Because .PG2 files are heavily specialized, standard online converters almost always fail to read them. They rely on proprietary binary encoding or unique schemas that only the original software understands. Our tools can identify the exact file format, inspect the binary code, and often extract human-readable text. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PG2 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PG1, MARKER and SU files.

The PG2 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PG2 converter.
