The .pfr extension is most commonly associated with the Portable Font Resource format developed by Bitstream Inc. This legacy technology was designed for TrueDoc dynamic font embedding in early web browsers like Netscape Navigator and digital TV systems. Unlike modern WOFF or TTF files, PFR files are heavily compressed and proprietary, making them unreadable by modern browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox) and operating systems. Users often encounter these files when recovering archived websites or legacy digital broadcasting assets. Converting them is difficult due to a lack of modern tooling, but specialized font editors can sometimes salvage the glyph data.
A secondary, less common use (approx. 1%) is as a Picture Frame file for PaintShop Pro by Corel. These files contain raster or vector graphics used to add decorative borders to photos. While useful within the Corel ecosystem, they are useless to users of Adobe Photoshop or standard image viewers.
