About PDWR files

A .pdwr file is a ProntoDoc for Word Conventional Document. It is created by the ProntoDoc add-in, an enterprise document generation tool developed by Step Function. These files act as smart templates, linking Microsoft Word directly to corporate databases to automatically populate fields, tables, and charts with live data.

The main disadvantage of the .pdwr format is that it is highly proprietary. It requires a paid license and the specific ProntoDoc add-in installed on the user's machine to open properly. If you send a .pdwr file to a client, they will likely see errors or broken links because they lack the necessary database connections and software. Standard web browsers cannot render these files, and standard document viewers fail to interpret the embedded data tags.

To share these documents safely, you must convert them to standard target formats like DOCX, PDF, or RTF. Converting to PDF is the best choice for preserving layout, but keep in mind that conversion flattens the document. You will lose the dynamic data tags and the ability to update the information automatically from the database.

Because this is a closed, proprietary format heavily reliant on local database connections, standard online converters usually fail to process it. Only the original software can properly execute the data queries to generate the final layout. Even when direct conversion fails, our analysis tool can often inspect the underlying XML structure of the file to extract raw text and recover your static content.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PDWR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
