A .pctl file is a proprietary settings file created by Kaspersky Lab security software. It is specifically used to store and transfer Parental Control configurations, such as restricted websites, application blocks, and screen time limits. Parents export these files to easily apply the same security rules across multiple computers in a household.
This format has significant limitations for standard users. It is a closed, proprietary file type that requires an active installation of Kaspersky Internet Security or Kaspersky Total Security to open. You cannot native read or edit it in Windows or macOS. Furthermore, Kaspersky often encodes or obfuscates the internal data to prevent children from tampering with the rules, making it highly difficult to open in a standard text editor.
