The .PAPERS file is a proprietary resource container used by Corel Painter to store digital paper textures and canvas surfaces. Digital artists and illustrators use these texture files to simulate the exact surface grain, bump, and lighting interaction of traditional media like watercolor paper or rough canvas.
Designed exclusively for Corel Painter, which is developed by Corel, this format presents severe compatibility limitations. The .PAPERS format is a closed, proprietary file architecture. It cannot be previewed in a web browser, Windows File Explorer, or macOS Finder. Furthermore, you cannot natively open or import these files into competing digital painting software like Adobe Photoshop or Clip Studio Paint. Sharing these textures with collaborators who do not pay for a Corel Painter license is practically impossible without manual workarounds, and standard online converters fail to process the proprietary architecture.
To make the texture usable elsewhere, the best approach is to convert the data into standard PNG or JPG seamless image files. Note that direct conversion loses the dynamic mathematical bump and friction parameters native to the Corel brush engine, yielding only a flat visual representation of the texture.
Because .PAPERS is a highly specific, proprietary format, typically only the original software can natively read the texture parameters. Standard converters cannot decode the container.
