The .p97 file is a proprietary database format generated by Win97, a legacy software developed by Starrsoft for programming GRE and RadioShack radio scanners (specifically the PRO-97 and PRO-2055 models). It stores frequency lists, talkgroups, trunking system data, and scanner configuration settings mapped exactly to the hardware's memory structure.
The main disadvantage of the .p97 format is its highly specific, closed nature. It is tied to outdated software and cannot be opened natively by modern spreadsheet applications or database managers. Furthermore, the software requires a Windows environment, creating a barrier for users on modern macOS or Linux systems. Users typically need to convert this data to extract their frequency lists into standard, accessible formats like CSV or TXT.
