Extract text from Pix4D projects (P4D)
To convert P4D projects to another format, you need Pix4Dmapper or other GIS software.
To convert other file formats to the "Photogrammetry Project File" file type, you need software like Pix4Dmapper or a similar tool.
The .P4D file is a proprietary project file generated by Pix4D photogrammetry software. It saves the configuration, processing parameters, and local directory paths for drone mapping and 3D modeling projects.
The main disadvantage of a .P4D file is that it is heavily vendor-locked. It requires a costly subscription to Pix4D software to open or process. Furthermore, this format does not actually contain the heavy image data or the final 3D meshes; it acts as a database that only links to external image sets on your local drive. Because of this dependency, you cannot view this file in standard web browsers or standard 3D viewers.
Users typically want to convert a .P4D project into universal, standalone 3D or GIS formats. Ideal target formats include LAS for point clouds, OBJ for 3D meshes, or GeoTIFF for orthomosaics.
Because this is a closed, proprietary project file linking to external assets rather than a self-contained 3D model, standard online converters fail to process it. Often, only the original Pix4D software can properly read the file, process the source images, and export the final 3D data.
