About OYX files

The .OYX file is an Approach Alternate Database Index utilized by Lotus Approach, an obsolete relational database management system developed by IBM. These files store indexing rules and pointers designed to accelerate search queries and data sorting within a connected database.

Users typically encounter .OYX files in legacy system backups. A major disadvantage of this format is that it is proprietary and completely dependent on an extinct software ecosystem. More importantly, an index file does not contain actual database records. It only holds structural references to the primary database files, typically saved as DBF or APR.

Standard online converters fail to process .OYX files because they lack actual table data to convert. You cannot directly translate an index into an XLSX or CSV spreadsheet. To export the data, users usually need the original parent database file, a legacy Windows operating system, and a licensed copy of Lotus SmartSuite.

Despite these strict limitations, you can still inspect the file. If our analysis detects underlying text fragments, embedded metadata, or supported structures, viewing or partial conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your OYX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The OYX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OYX converter.
