Convert OVM to another file type
To convert OVM 3D files to another format, you need OpenVolumeMesh or other 3D software.
Convert a file to OVM
To convert other file formats to the "Polyhedral Mesh Data" file type, you need software like OpenVolumeMesh or a similar tool.
About OVM files
The .OVM file extension represents a Volumetric Mesh created by the OpenVolumeMesh library, a project maintained by RWTH Aachen University. Unlike standard 3D formats (like STL or OBJ) that only describe the outer shell (surface) of an object, OVM files store complex internal structure using polyhedral cells, faces, edges, and vertices. This makes them essential for scientific simulations, finite element analysis (FEA), and fluid dynamics where the volume matters, not just the skin.
Practical Constraints: Because .OVM files are specialized research formats, they suffer from poor compatibility with mainstream 3D software. You cannot simply double-click to open them in standard viewers like Windows 3D Viewer, and industry giants like Blender or Autodesk Maya do not support them natively. Furthermore, .OVM files are typically ASCII (text-based), meaning they can become unwieldy and large compared to binary alternatives. Users often find themselves locked out of their data, unable to render it for presentations or import it into game engines.
Best Conversion Targets: For visualization, the best workflow is converting .OVM to VTK (for scientific tools like ParaView) or OBJ (if you only need the outer surface for rendering). For 3D printing, converting the boundary mesh to STL is the standard approach.
Convert.Guru analyzes your OVM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
FAQ
If you want to convert OVM file to SYS, DLL, EXE, DRV, VXD, 386, COM, BAT, CMD, SCR, PIF or LNK, you can use OpenVolumeMesh or similar software from the "Volumetric Mesh Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MSI, EXE, REG, MST, LNK, CAB, CAT, DRV, INF, SYS, MSU or DLL files to OVM, try OpenVolumeMesh or another comparable tool in the "Volumetric Mesh Storage" category.
The OVM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OVM converter.
