Convert OVM to another file type
To convert OVM 3D files to another format, you need OpenVolumeMesh or other 3D software.
Convert a file to OVM
To convert other file formats to the "Volumetric Mesh File" file type, you need software like OpenVolumeMesh or a similar tool.
About OVM files
The .OVM file is a volumetric mesh data file used to store complex polyhedral topologies. It is the native storage format for the OpenVolumeMesh C++ library, which is heavily used in academic research and computational geometry. You can open or manipulate .OVM files programmatically using the OpenVolumeMesh framework. Some advanced visualization tools may support it via custom plugins, but standard desktop software cannot read it directly. Users typically need to convert .OVM files because they are practically invisible to standard 3D design software. Standard tools like Blender or Autodesk Maya do not support volumetric, non-manifold polyhedral meshes out-of-the-box. The format is highly specialized, meaning sharing these files with clients or colleagues who lack a computational geometry background is impossible without conversion. The best target formats for visual sharing are OBJ, STL, or PLY. However, conversion forces a strict downgrade: these target formats only represent the outer surface boundary of the mesh. All internal volumetric cells and topological data will be permanently lost during the conversion process. This file format is difficult to open or convert because the data structures it stores are highly specific to the library's internal logic. Often, only the original OpenVolumeMesh code can properly read or export the volumetric data. Standard online converters fail because they expect standard polygonal surfaces, not polyhedral volumes. Drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your OVM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
FAQ
If you want to convert OVM file to SYS, DLL, EXE, DRV, VXD, 386, COM, BAT, CMD, SCR, PIF or LNK, you can use OpenVolumeMesh or similar software from the "Volumetric Mesh Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MSI, EXE, REG, MST, LNK, CAB, CAT, DRV, INF, SYS, MSU or DLL files to OVM, try OpenVolumeMesh or another comparable tool in the "Volumetric Mesh Data Storage" category.
The OVM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OVM converter.
