About OVB files

The .OVB file extension serves two entirely different purposes: it is either an XML-based audio effect preset bank used by Overloud audio software, or an encrypted audio and video message backup created by WhatsApp. Overloud uses these files to store specific dial configurations, EQ curves, and modeling parameters for their digital audio plugins. Conversely, WhatsApp uses this extension for securely storing encrypted media attachments on a user's local device. The primary disadvantage of the .OVB format is its highly specific, proprietary nature. Overloud preset files contain no actual audio data, only text-based instructions. Users frequently misunderstand this and attempt to convert them directly to playable media like MP3 or WAV, which is technically impossible. Meanwhile, WhatsApp .OVB backups are heavily encrypted to protect user privacy. They require a specific decryption key stored internally by the WhatsApp application, meaning standard media players or archive extraction tools cannot open them. For Overloud files, the most practical conversion targets are readable text formats like XML or TXT. Because the underlying structure is XML, you can often inspect the file to read parameter values. WhatsApp backups, however, cannot be meaningfully converted into standard media formats outside of the WhatsApp ecosystem due to their encryption.
