The .OVB file extension represents two distinct, proprietary formats that often confuse users due to their inability to be opened by standard software.
First, and most commonly, it is an Overloud Audio Effect Preset Bank. These files act as containers for complex audio signal chains (rigs) used by Overloud software such as TH-U and REmatrix. They store amplifier settings, cabinet impulses, and effects parameters in a structured XML or binary format. The primary difficulty for producers is that .OVB files cannot be double-clicked to load; they must be manually imported via the plugin's internal "Bank" manager. Additionally, because the data is tied to specific DSP algorithms, converting them to generic formats like PDF or standard audio is impossible without losing the functional rig data.
Second, the extension is associated with WhatsApp Audio Message Backups on Android devices. In this context, the file serves as an encrypted archive - sometimes identified as encrypted video data - containing voice notes or chat media. Users typically encounter these when attempting manual data recovery. Unlike standard OPUS or M4A voice notes, an .OVB backup is often wrapped in proprietary encryption, making it impossible to play in VLC Media Player or convert to MP3 without the original decryption key managed by the WhatsApp application.
