The .otmu file is an Origin Unicode Matrix Template used by Origin, a proprietary data analysis and graphing software developed by OriginLab. It stores the dimensions, structural formatting, mathematical operations, and display settings of a data matrix. Scientists and engineers use these templates to apply consistent parameters to multiple datasets without reconfiguring the matrix layout every time.
This format is strictly proprietary and closed. Opening an .otmu file requires an expensive OriginLab subscription. Standard tools like Microsoft Excel or basic text editors cannot read the matrix configurations natively. Users face extreme frustration when colleagues share these templates, as the files are completely useless without the specific paid software installed on the recipient's machine.
When attempting to share the underlying matrix structure, the best target formats are CSV, XLSX, or TXT. Converting to these universally accepted formats ensures that the grid structure and any default values are readable by standard spreadsheet tools. However, you will lose the proprietary Origin-specific mathematical formulas, custom styling, and advanced matrix attributes during the transition.
