About OSB files
The .OSB extension is a classic example of a filename collision, primarily serving two distinct gaming communities with completely different technical structures. Most frequently, you will encounter this as an osu! Storyboard File, a plain text script used by the rhythm game osu!. These files do not contain actual video or audio; instead, they contain code instructions that tell the game how to animate background images (sprites) during gameplay. Users often find these files frustrating because they expect a video file, but opening them reveals only lines of code. To "convert" this for viewing, you must run the script within the game engine or use a simulator, while archiving usually involves zipping it into an OSZ container.
Alternatively, in the context of retro gaming and emulation, an .OSB file is a Sega Dreamcast Sound Bank. These are proprietary binary containers holding instrument samples and audio data for games on the Sega Dreamcast console. Unlike the text-based osu! files, these are unreadable in standard editors. Enthusiasts looking to preserve game audio often face the challenge of proprietary lock-in, requiring specialized extraction utilities to convert the internal audio streams into usable WAV or MP3 formats. Less commonly, this extension represents OpenStreetMap binary map data or OpenSceneGraph binaries, used for geospatial and 3D simulation data, which are best converted to standard 3D formats like OBJ or GIS formats for broader compatibility.
Convert.Guru analyzes your OSB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert OSB file to SHP, KML, KMZ, GPX, GEOJSON, TOPOJSON, TIF, TIFF, ECW, SID, IMG or DEM, you can use osu! or similar software from the "Game Asset Configuration" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert LAZ, KMZ, DTM, CSV, DEM, PRJ, LAS, GPX, DSM, SHP, DBF or KML files to OSB, try osu! or another comparable tool in the "Game Asset Configuration" category.
The OSB Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OSB converter.
