About OSB files
An .OSB file is a multi-purpose extension most commonly associated with either an osu! Storyboard Script used by the rhythm game osu! or a Sega Dreamcast Sound Bank. In osu!, it defines background animations, visual effects, and timing sequences. In the context of older gaming hardware, it serves as an audio archive for Sega Dreamcast games. Alternatively, it can function as an OpenSceneGraph Binary File used in 3D rendering engines like OpenSimulator and Forza Motorsport, or as an OpenStreetMap Binary Map File handled by Merkaartor.
The primary disadvantage of the .OSB format is its extreme fragmentation. The extension is shared across completely unrelated industries (rhythm games, legacy consoles, 3D engines, and GIS mapping). A Sega sound bank is a closed, proprietary binary archive locked to 1990s hardware architecture, making it impossible to open with modern audio players without specialized extraction tools. OpenSceneGraph files are compiled 3D binaries that require the original engine to render properly. osu! storyboards are simply plain text, but only the game engine can visually interpret the commands. This fragmentation means standard online converters typically fail because they cannot identify which internal structure the file uses.
Users often need to extract Sega audio to standard formats like WAV or MP3 for modding, or convert OpenSceneGraph files to standard 3D formats like OBJ. This is where convert.guru provides a practical solution. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. Because convert.guru can inspect the internal hex structure of the file, it can distinguish between plain text scripts and compiled 3D binaries. Even if the file is a closed, proprietary format, our tool can often show underlying text or embedded assets. If our analysis detects a supported embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your OSB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert OSB file to SHP, KML, KMZ, GPX, GEOJSON, TOPOJSON, TIF, TIFF, ECW, SID, IMG or DEM, you can use osu! or similar software from the "Game Asset Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert LAZ, KMZ, DTM, CSV, DEM, PRJ, LAS, GPX, DSM, SHP, DBF or KML files to OSB, try osu! or another comparable tool in the "Game Asset Storage" category.
The OSB Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OSB converter.
