About ORT files

An .ORT file is primarily a browser autofill data file used by the Opera web browser to securely store user form information. Secondarily, it functions as a deprecated Rich Text Editor Document originally created by IBM.

As a browser-specific settings file, the Opera .ORT format is heavily siloed and completely proprietary. It is not designed for human readability, lacks native support in standard text editors, and cannot be opened manually. The IBM variant is equally frustrating for modern users; it was typically utilized as a server session crash recovery log for IBM WebSphere Portal and requires discontinued, paid toolkits like Textbox.io to open natively. This makes extracting your own text from these legacy or internal formats incredibly difficult.

Converting these files to accessible formats like TXT, JSON, or XML is the most pragmatic workaround to salvage the underlying text data without relying on an obsolete IBM software stack or a specific Opera user profile. Be aware that proprietary formatting, complex layouts, and browser-specific encryption will be lost during plain text conversion.

Because .ORT files are either internal browser databases or obscure legacy documents, standard online converters routinely fail to process them. If our analysis detects a supported underlying SQLite database or embedded text structure, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ORT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The ORT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ORT converter.
