About OPDOWNLOAD files
An .opdownload file is a temporary data container generated by the Opera web browser. When a user initiates a file transfer, Opera creates this placeholder extension to continuously write the incoming data stream to the local disk. Once the download reaches 100% completion, Opera automatically deletes the .opdownload suffix, revealing the true target format, which is typically a ZIP (26%), MP4 (17%), or RAR (13%).
You cannot natively 'open' an .opdownload file because it is, by definition, a truncated and structurally broken file. Users typically encounter this extension when a download is interrupted by a network failure, a closed browser, or a server timeout. The main disadvantage of an .opdownload file is that it lacks the crucial end-of-file metadata required by software parsers. For example, a partially downloaded ZIP file will be missing its central directory at the end of the archive, making it unreadable by standard unzipping utilities. A partial MP4 might lack the 'moov' atom index needed for video playback.
Standard online converters will completely fail to process an .opdownload file because they rely on complete file structures and recognize extensions that do not exist here. The best traditional workaround is to resume the download within Opera. If that is impossible, manually renaming the file by deleting '.opdownload' (e.g., changing 'video.mp4.opdownload' to 'video.mp4') can sometimes trick forgiving software like VLC Media Player into playing the partial data.
Because this file format is essentially raw, incomplete byte data, traditional conversion workflows hit a wall. However, convert.guru offers a pragmatic, realistic workaround for file challenges. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. Our deep-scan analysis engine reads the binary header of the .opdownload file - which is usually fully intact - to detect the embedded underlying format. If our system detects a supported signature like PDF or EXE, viewing the hex structure or extracting partial text and media layers may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your OPDOWNLOAD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert OPDOWNLOAD file to PDF, MP4, TMP, TEMP, CACHE, LOG, BAK, OLD, NEW, PART, DOWNLOAD or CRDOWNLOAD, you can use Opera or similar software from the "Temporary Download Placeholder File" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DEVICE, CACHE, SOCK, SYMLINK, PID, MOUNT, FIFO, LOG, PIPE, TMP, JUNCTION or TEMP files to OPDOWNLOAD, try Opera or another comparable tool in the "Temporary Download Placeholder File" category.
The OPDOWNLOAD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OPDOWNLOAD converter.
