The .OOK file extension is an Arachne Batch Script used primarily by the Arachne DOS-based graphical web browser. It operates as a local script file that executes commands to open external DOS programs directly from the browser environment.
Originally developed by Michal Polák, Arachne was popular in the late 1990s for bringing a graphical internet experience to MS-DOS systems. The primary disadvantage of the .OOK format today is its severe obsolescence. Modern operating systems like Windows 11, macOS, or Linux do not natively recognize this extension. Double-clicking the file will usually trigger a frustrating 'unknown application' error, creating an immediate roadblock for users who simply need to view the code inside an old software archive.
Because an .OOK file is structurally identical to a standard BAT file, it contains unformatted plain text. We recommend converting .OOK files to standard TXT or PDF to ensure the script's code is easily readable and securely archived across modern hardware.
