About OIF files
The .OIF (Olympus Image Format) file is predominantly a confocal microscopy image file created by Olympus FluoView microscope systems. Rather than holding image data directly, the .OIF file acts as a structural map. It uses a UTF-16 (LE) text format to store metadata, hardware settings, and pointers to a companion folder containing the actual high-resolution image slices (typically stored as standard TIFF files). Additionally, a smaller percentage of .OIF files function as proprietary accounting database files for Tally Solutions or as Origin Import Filter Files for OriginLab.
The Olympus .OIF format presents severe limitations for sharing and archiving. It is highly proprietary and extremely fragile because it relies on an external directory of files to function. If a user moves or emails the single .OIF file without its corresponding data folder, the file becomes completely useless. Furthermore, standard web browsers and operating system image viewers cannot parse the complex multi-dimensional, multi-channel data. Users typically need to convert these files into standard image formats like TIFF, PNG, or JPG to include them in publications or share them with colleagues.
Standard online converters inevitably fail to process .OIF files because they only read the small text header you upload, unable to reach the associated image files on your local hard drive. Properly exporting the data usually requires the original software or specialized open-source tools like ImageJ equipped with the Bio-Formats plugin. Despite these structural challenges, you can still drag and drop your .OIF file into convert.guru to identify the exact format, view the internal text metadata, and convert it when possible. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your OIF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert OIF file to JPG, PDF, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, TIF, WEBP, ICO, CUR, PSD or PSB, you can use Olympus FluoView or similar software from the "Microscopy Image Header Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert RAW, PNG, AI, NEF, PSB, DNG, SVG, GIF, EPS, JPG, ARW or PDF files to OIF, try Olympus FluoView or another comparable tool in the "Microscopy Image Header Data" category.
The OIF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OIF converter.
