About OC4 files
The .OC4 file extension represents an openCanvas 4 Event File, a highly proprietary format developed by Portalgraphics. Unlike standard image formats, an .OC4 file does not simply store a grid of pixels. Instead, it functions as a detailed macro, recording every single tool action, brush stroke, canvas rotation, and layer adjustment made by the artist. This allows the complete digital drawing process to be replayed from a blank canvas to the final illustration within the openCanvas software.
While this playback feature is excellent for tutorials and sharing techniques, the .OC4 format presents severe disadvantages for everyday use. Because it is a proprietary event log, the file is entirely useless outside of the openCanvas ecosystem. It cannot be opened by standard image viewers, web browsers, or industry-standard professional tools like Adobe Photoshop. Furthermore, the format is version-specific; opening an .OC4 file in newer versions of openCanvas often results in playback errors or corrupted strokes, effectively locking artists out of their own legacy artwork.
Because an .OC4 file is essentially a script of actions rather than a flat image, standard online image converters will fail to process it. Converting this file into a usable image requires the original openCanvas rendering engine to mathematically execute the recorded strokes and generate the final pixels. The ideal solution is to open the file in openCanvas and export the final frame to PNG, JPG, or PSD (to preserve layers).
This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert without the original software. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded preview image, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your OC4 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The OC4 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OC4 converter.
