Convert OAR to another file type

To convert OAR archives to another format, you need OpenSimulator or other Backup software.

Convert a file to OAR

To convert other file formats to the "OpenSimulator Region Archive" file type, you need software like OpenSimulator or a similar tool.

About OAR files

An .OAR file is an OpenSimulator Archive used to back up and transfer entire 3D regions within the OpenSimulator platform. These files contain complex spatial data, including terrain heights, textures, object placements, and scripts.

The primary software used to generate and load these files is the OpenSimulator server application. Under the hood, the file is usually a compressed tarball (TAR.GZ).

Users often need to convert or extract .OAR files to recover specific assets like textures or 3D models. However, the format is highly specialized and tightly coupled with the OpenSimulator engine. It is not supported by standard 3D modeling software like Blender or web browsers. Files often exceed gigabytes in size, making them difficult to share or inspect without a running virtual world server.

The most practical workaround is extracting the archive to access the underlying XML, JP2 (JPEG 2000), and script files. Direct conversion to standard 3D formats like OBJ or FBX is not natively possible without specialized migration scripts.

This file format is notoriously difficult to convert because only the original OpenSimulator environment can properly interpret the spatial relationships and physics data.

Convert.Guru analyzes your OAR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

FAQ

If you want to convert OAR file to ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, GZ, BZ2, XZ, LZMA, CAB, ACE, ARJ or LHA, you can use OpenSimulator or similar software from the "Virtual World Region Backup" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert XXE, 7Z, Z, PAK, LHA, DEB, UUE, TAR, LZH, ZIP, PKG or RAR files to OAR, try OpenSimulator or another comparable tool in the "Virtual World Region Backup" category.

The OAR Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OAR converter.
