About NXC files

.NXC files contain source code written in Not eXactly C, a high-level programming language specifically designed for the Lego Mindstorms NXT robotics kit. This language allows developers to write instructions for the robot brick in a syntax closely resembling standard C.

The primary environment used to write and compile these files is the Bricx Command Center (BricxCC), a specialized IDE developed by John Hansen.

Because the .NXC format is highly niche, standard operating systems do not know what to do with it. Double-clicking an .NXC file will usually result in an error or prompt you to search for an app. Furthermore, you cannot simply execute an .NXC file on a robot; it must be compiled into an RXE (NXT Executable) file using the built-in NBC compiler.

For sharing or external editing, you often need to convert these files. The best target formats are TXT, C, or PDF. Changing the file to C allows standard code editors to apply correct syntax highlighting. Converting to PDF is ideal for printing code or submitting academic robotics assignments without losing formatting.

Technically, an .NXC file is a plain text file, but standard online converters often reject unfamiliar extensions.

Convert.Guru analyzes your NXC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The NXC Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NXC converter.
