About NWM files
The .NWM extension primarily belongs to two distinct formats: the Sony NWM Display Screen and the Nisus Macro. Sony uses this extension for static or animated raster images displayed on vintage Sony Network Walkman MP3 players (such as the NW-E405). Conversely, Nisus Writer Pro for macOS uses the exact same extension for macro files that automate repetitive word processing tasks. Users often encounter these files in old backups. The Sony image format is highly proprietary, optimized strictly for low-resolution 2000s MP3 player screens, and is completely unsupported by modern web browsers. Meanwhile, Nisus Macros are actually standard Rich Text Format (RTF) files under the hood, but the .NWM extension forces most text editors to reject them. Converting the Sony files to JPG, PNG, or GIF makes them viewable on any device. Nisus macros can be safely converted to RTF or TXT to inspect the underlying code without needing a Mac. Proprietary extensions intentionally break standard file associations, and typical online converters fail because they rely purely on the extension name rather than analyzing the raw binary header.
Convert.Guru analyzes your NWM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The NWM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NWM converter.
