About NRBAK files
The .NRBAK file format is a proprietary backup archive created by legacy desktop software from The Neat Company, such as NeatReceipts and NeatDesk. These files are used to store scanned images of receipts alongside extracted OCR data, including vendors, dates, tax amounts, and totals.
Historically, these files were managed using NeatWorks or Neat 5 desktop software. However, the format is highly restrictive and largely obsolete. The Neat Company transitioned to a cloud-based subscription model and discontinued their classic desktop applications, leaving many users locked out of their own financial data. You cannot simply open a .NRBAK file in modern tools like Microsoft Excel or standard image viewers. The file sizes can be massive, and lacking the original software makes data recovery extremely frustrating.
Users typically want to convert .NRBAK files into CSV for the financial data and PDF or JPG for the scanned receipt images. Because this is a complex database container rather than a flat document, standard online converters fail to process it. Only the original software can properly restore the database hierarchy.
Convert.Guru analyzes your NRBAK file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The NRBAK Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NRBAK converter.
