About NGLOSS files

The .ngloss file stores glossary data for Nisus Writer Pro and Nisus Writer Express, a set of word processors designed for macOS. These files contain user-defined abbreviations and their corresponding text expansions. When a user types a shorthand code in their document, the software reads the .ngloss file to automatically expand the abbreviation into full words, paragraphs, or even images. You can open and edit these files natively using Nisus Writer. The .ngloss format is heavily restricted. It is a proprietary, closed data format designed exclusively for the macOS ecosystem. You cannot natively open it in standard word processors like Microsoft Word, LibreOffice, or web-based text editors. If you migrate away from macOS or Nisus Writer, your glossary abbreviations become inaccessible without a manual export. The most pragmatic target formats for glossary data are .TXT or .CSV for plain text key-value pairs, or .RTF and .DOCX if the expansions contain rich text formatting. Converting to plain text ensures maximum compatibility across platforms, though advanced formatting like bold text or tables inside the expansions will be lost. This file format is difficult to open or convert because its internal structure is undocumented. Standard online converters fail because they lack the specific parsing logic. Often, only the original Nisus Writer software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or text extraction may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your NGLOSS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
