The .nav2 file extension is a WinAVI Temporary Navigation File generated by WinAVI software products, primarily during video conversion and DVD authoring workflows. It stores temporary structural data, chapter markers, and indexing instructions while the main video payload is rendered.
These proprietary files are created dynamically in the background by WinAVI Video Converter and other tools by ZJMedia. The major disadvantage of the .nav2 format is that it is a closed, temporary metadata format. It does not contain actual video or audio streams. Users often find these files abandoned on their hard drives if a video conversion process crashes, hangs, or is abruptly interrupted. Because it lacks standard media encoding, video players and generic converters completely fail to process it.
Since this is an intermediate state file, direct conversion to standard video formats like MP4, MKV, or AVI is impossible - there is no media data to convert. Standard online converters fail to process it because they look for video streams that simply do not exist in the file.
